Sanding against the grain
Sanding against the grain is probably the most common problem beginners encounter; it happens easily without thinking. However, sanding against the grain results in an unsightly texture on your piece of wood and diminishes its aesthetic value.
To avoid this, always sand along the grain with sandpaper. This eliminates the initial scratches by removing a little more wood. Use wood polishing pads to enhance the sanding and polishing process. In combination with sandpaper, this will give you a very fine finish.
Incorrect rotational speed
In woodturning, a turning tool is required to achieve the desired results. The turning tool rotates the block of wood at high speeds, typically from 500 to 1,500 revolutions per minute (rpm). Because of the wide range of speeds, beginners tend to start at higher speeds, believing they need the extra rotation to complete the work.
That's not true, and it's advisable to start slowly and gradually increase the speed. This reduces the likelihood of accidents and injuries; the faster the wood spins, the more dangerous it becomes if it breaks loose. Always start slowly and never underestimate the destructive power of a block of wood spinning 1,000 times per minute.
Do not sharpen tools
Due to the nature of woodturning, your tools will dull much faster than in other woodworking processes. This is because of the rotations generated by the turning tool; each rotation dulls your tool.
Check your tools for wear every 15 to 25 minutes. Wear may occur faster than you expect, so it's important to notice it before your tools become too dull to function safely.
